Disposal Vapes - How safe are they, do they expire, and can they be recycled?

Disposable vapes are quickly taking over the market. With no leakages, tricky parts to replace, or chances of forgetting to charge it, vape pens have quickly made a name for themselves in the growing e-cigarette industry.

For one thing, disposable vapes can be an awesome way for a new vaper to get started – disposable pens offer a low-stakes way to give it a try because of their low cost and the fact they’re an all-in-one vape with no need to buy e-liquid on the side.

Vape pens are used in the UK and around the world for recreational and health purposes and are a better alternative to smoking cigarettes for a bunch of reasons. But are they safe, do they expire, and can they be recycled? Keep reading and find out.

 Are disposable vapes safe?

In short, yes, vapes are safe. Or, at least they are safer when compared to traditional cigarettes. It’s still early days and it’s not 100% clear if vaping is less safe than not vaping, but if you are going to use nicotine, it’s abundantly clear that vaping is safer than cigarettes.

That’s because disposable vapes produce vapour which doesn’t have all the dangerous substances found in traditional tobacco products like tar and carbon monoxide, the two most harmful elements in cigarettes. There’s a reason why the NHS calls vapes the most effective stop-smoking aid on the market – they're far less harmful than cigarettes and can help you quit smoking for good.

Do disposable vapes expire?

Disposable vapes contain between 1 and 3 ml of e-liquid, usually a combination of nicotine, vegetable glycerine, or propylene glycol and flavourings, which are responsible for smooth and safe vapour production. For most people, a disposable vape lasts a couple of days, somewhere between 300 to 500 puffs.

Because they’re disposable, when the battery dies or the e-liquid is all used up, the vape is finished and ready to throw away for a new one. But if you’re wondering about buying disposable vapes in bulk and keeping them until you’re ready to vape, you’ll always find an expiry date on the packaging. Most vapes last between 1-2 years if properly stored.

Can disposable vapes be recycled?

Disposable vapes come with all their components built-in, meaning they can’t be replaced. At the moment, lots of the materials used to manufacture vapes are still difficult to recycle. But don’t worry, because of the growth of the industry, people are already working hard on it.

You can always check with your local recycling centre. We recommend building up a decent collection of used vapes and then taking them to your local recycling depot. Just make sure to check first that they take them.

An important thing to remember with vapes is that it’s all relative. While they may not be fully recyclable yet, they are still miles better than cigarette butts which are made from cellulose acetate, a type of plastic that takes over a decade to decompose and are the biggest cause of plastic pollution in our oceans.
